Waites Island Sea Turtle Watch

Waites Island Sea Turtle Watch

Waites Island Sea Turtle MonitorField work is at the heart of sea turtle research and conservation. Only through the passion, time, and energy devoted by those working on the ground can data be collected, beaches monitored, and local conservation strategies devised. The more people who get involved the more likely we are to succeed at continuing to increase the sea turtle population.

Sea turtle volunteers are active each year on Waties Island with daily monitoring from May through October. This South Carolina Department of Natural Resources permitted program involves over 50 volunteers who walk the beach each morning looking for sea turtle nests. When found, the nests are protected from predators  and monitored until they hatch. The data from  each nest  is collected, compiled and reported to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Marine Turtle Conservation Program (SCDNR).
