  • Many airlines post their environmental policies online.
  • Choose airlines with in-flight recycling programs.
  • Choose electronic tickets over paper if given the option.


  • Be sure to pack light! Heavier planes use more fuel and emit more carbon into the atmosphere.
  • Stop your newspaper delivery.
  • Depending on weather, turn down heating thermostat or turn up the temperature on your air conditioner.
  • Turn down the thermostat on your water heater.
  • Unplug appliances that won’t be in use while you are away.
  • Bring a nightlight so you don’t need to leave a hotel bathroom light on.


  • Stay in a vacation rental and wash your sheets only when you need to or let the hotel know that you prefer not to have towels and sheets changed every day.
  • Turn off the AC, heat, lights, and TV when you leave the room.
  • Participate in the hotel’s recycling program.
  • Conserve water. Keep showers short and turn off water while brushing your teeth.
  • Bring your own cup or re-usable water bottle rather than using the disposable ones provided.

  • Walk wherever possible – it’s a great way to experience a destination!
  • Take only brochures or maps that you plan on using.
  • Use a digital camera instead of a disposable camera.
  • Many cities have bike rental programs — sightsee, get some exercise and save money.
  • If renting a car, choose a hybrid or the smallest car for your needs.
  • Seeks out farmers’ markets for meals and snacks.
