Tucked away among the live oaks and magnolias of the coastal South Carolina region are numerous 18th and 19th century plantations.  The majority of South Carolina’s low country plantations were established before the Civil War.  Some functioned as smaller homes with out-buildings for farmhands and house staff.  Others were massive and magnificent mansions where owners worked to harvest rice and tobacco in the day and hosted extravagant ballroom parties in the evening.  South Carolina historical societies and organizations work to preserve the grounds and colonial-era buildings.  Many offer educational tours of the grounds that serve as an interpretive site for the system of slavery that helped build plantations in South Carolina into the greatest generators of wealth in early American history.  These National Historic Landmarks preserve the native flora and fauna of the region as well as the stories of the people who first inhabited these wondrous spaces.
